Role Overview

The Assistant Health Director supports the health and safety of participants and staff at the Telluride Association Summer Seminar (TASS) at the Cornell Branch of the Telluride Association. The Cornell TASS program serves approximately 36 high school juniors and seniors in an intensive summer program centered on a college-level humanities seminar.

Prior to participants’ arrival, the Assistant Health Director works part time to review medical histories and coordinate with parents, guardians, and staff to support preparation for a safe and well-supported program. During the program, the Assistant Health Director works part time and provides support during TASSer medical check-in, serves as coverage during the Health Director’s scheduled time off, and assists with supervision, medication administration, and overall health and safety oversight. The Assistant Health Director also accompanies participants on field trips as needed.

The Assistant Health Director reports to the Health Director and works closely with on-site staff, including the Camp Director, Resident Advisors (equivalent to counselors), Teaching Assistants, Faculty, and building staff.

  • Compensation: $35.82/hour
  • Schedule:
    • Training, Program Prep, and Camper Arrival (June 17-June 20, 2026): 60 hours total over two weeks, Must be available full day and evening Saturday 6/20 and Sunday 6/21 for camper health intake.
    • Program Period (June 21-July 25, 2026): 20 hours/week, Additional hours may be required based on camper needs.
    • Scheduled days by arrangement with supervisor. Evening and weekend hours required. Additional hours may be required based on camper needs. 
  • Location and Travel:
    • Cornell Branch of the Telluride Association (217 West Ave, Ithaca, NY 14850).
    • May be required to travel to complete health training certifications required by the state, if not already certified.

  • Benefits Status: Not benefits eligible. Sick leave provided. 

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Must have New York State certification as a physician, nurse practitioner, physician assistant, registered nurse, licensed practical nurse, emergency medical technician, or other person acceptable to the permit issuing official. 
  • Must possess valid certification in first aid. Approved first aid courses are listed in the NYSDOH Fact Sheet titled “First Aid Certification for NYS Children's Camp Staff” (www.health.ny.gov/environmental/outdoors/camps/) 
  • Must possess valid CPR certification dated within one year of the program. Annual CPR recertification is required, regardless of expiration date on card. Approved CPR courses are listed in the NYSDOH Fact Sheet titled “Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification for NYS Children's Camps and NYS Bathing Beaches” (www.health.ny.gov/environmental/outdoors/camps/).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities with a variety of audiences.
  • Excellent judgment and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to manage high-stress environments, especially in emergency situations.
  • High level of organization, attention to detail, and flexibility.
  • Proficiency in Google Drive and other web-based communication apps.
  • All Telluride residential summer seminar employees are required to have and provide proof of an FDA-or WHO-authorized or approved COVID-19 primary immunization and other required immunizations, or have obtained an approved disability/medical or religious exemption.
  • Ability to handle confidential information with discretion
  • Ability to meet travel requirements of the position.
  • Ability to meet acceptable background check standards.
  • Ability to work flexible hours which may include evenings and/or weekends, as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

  • New York State certification as a nurse practitioner, registered nurse, or licensed practical nurse is preferred. 
  • 1+ years experience with children’s summer camps and/or educational environments, particularly those serving high school students, is preferred. 
  • Access to a personal vehicle, driver’s license, and clean driving record is preferred.
  • Experience with and commitment to enacting anti-racism, diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace.
  • Experience with students of color, working-class students, LGBTQIA+ students, and/or other students of marginalized backgrounds.

Responsibilities

Program Preparation - 20%

  • Review and maintain TASS participants’ confidential medical histories.
  • Communicate as needed with parents and staff to prepare for the health and safety needs of each participant.
  • Assist with preparing the program infirmary.
  • Work with the Health Director, Camp Director, and other site staff to review and prepare health and safety plans and procedures. 
  • Complete training as required by the state of New York, Cornell University, and Telluride Association.

Program Operations - 80%

  • Assist with the implementation of the written safety plan’s medical components.
  • Assist with supervision of the health and sanitation at the camp.
  • Assist with initial health screening and daily health surveillance of the TASS participants. 
  • Address health emergencies and injuries, including emergency preparedness, transportation to medical care, and follow-up for professional health care. 
  • Maintain the camp medical log as instructed by the Health Director.
  • Assist with the infirmary’s operations.
  • Assist with TASS participant medication management, including intake inventory and supervision of self-administration of medications. 
  • Accompany field trips.
  • Collaborate closely with the Health Director to ensure that there is adequate staff availability for the program at all times. 
  • Meet regularly with supervisor and other program staff to ensure the health and safety of program participants and staff.
  • Assist with supporting and advising the Summer Program Manager in managing health and safety at Cornell University.
  • Provide feedback to the Summer Program Manager to improve future programs.

  • Support the general activities of Telluride Association and carry out other duties as assigned.

Work Environment and Physical Demands

  • Essential physical requirements: Position requires use of computer, phone, and office equipment. Position requires travel and evening/weekend work. Requires some movement of objects less than 100lb.
